In September 2013 we will be journeying to indonesia in the West Papua area, to the islands of Raja Ampat,. There we will spend 2 weeks kayaking this tropical paradise, camping and staying in village homestays.

Gear Notes

This is a list of technical notes about various gear that we have taken (or are taking) on trips - stuff that we've bought & are trying out and stuff that we (or others) have built.

SPOT Connect
This is a handy device that allows the friends and family to check where you are. The SPOT Connect is an upgrade on the SPOT Messenger we have that allows us to send a Check-in/OK message to a list of contacts and show tracking on a shared page.

The Connect also allows us to send custom messages from a mobile phone or iPod. This is a handy feature in wilderness areas where there is no mobile phone coverage.

Most of the features of the SPOT Connect are actually activated by an app on iPhone/iPod. The initial setup is a bit fiddly - make sure you do things in the order listed in the User manual (yes, read the manual!) and have your Contact Groups set up first before trying to do the Bluetooth pairing. The Support line is in New York and they are quite helpful if you are unsure!
